Sheila Mullen book signing Saturday 25th June

Artist Sheila Mullen will be signing copies of her new book The Bairns o Adam at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill this Saturday (25th June) from 10.30am-12.30pm.

And Thomas Tosh is also exhibiting the impressive original paintings featured in Sheila’s book.

Loves lost, ghostly visitors, riotous behaviour and some ghastly deeds feature in the paintings. And Sheila will also be talking about the Scottish tales, ballads and poems that have inspired her work and feature in her new book.

The exhibition runs until 30th June.

Mary Bromilow book signing today

Mary Bromilow is signing her new book: The Clydesdale-Workhorse of the World, from 10am-12.30pm this morning (Saturday 30th April). It's a handsome book. And it has an introduction from HRH The Prince of Wales if you are looking for a little royalty fix today.

And the Thornhill Blues festival continues today as well. There's bands in the pubs from 1pm and in Wallace Hall Academy later in the afternoon. It was a good night here in the village last night, so looking forward to the Festival today.

Emily Smith launches new album at Thomas Tosh

Folk singing star Emily Smith will be signing copies of her new CD-- Traiveller's Joy-- at Thomas Tosh this Saturday (22nd January 2011). And as a wee bonus, you can get a 10% discount on our normal retail price for the album. Emily's been enjoying lots of media attention and great reviews all week. We've been previewing the cd in the cafe and it sounds terrific. Emily is with us from 10.30am 'till noon.

Santa rides into Thornhill this coming Monday December 6th for the village’s ever-popular Christmas shopping night. There’s a whole host of shops open late, including Thomas Tosh, with a huge amount of ideas for those special festive presents.

As well as Santa on his sleigh, there’s lots of entertainment. Daffy Dill the Clown will be raising a laugh around the village, on stage will be Sanquhar Silver Band, the Buccleuch & Queensberry Caledonia Pipe Band, and a performance from pupils of Wallace Hall Academy.

There’s fair rides, and a wide range of market stalls many raising funds for local good causes. Come along and join the fun. The evening lasts 6pm-9pm.

Local illustrator Clare Melinsky is joining us from 10.30am-12.30pm to sign copies and box sets of the new Harry Potter Signature Editions. The Salon Returns tomorrow night (Tuesday 12th October)

Local poets Betty Tindal and Doug Curran will be at old parish hall at 19 East Morton, Street, Thornhill, tomorrow ( Tuesday 12th October). They are the guests for Thomas Tosh’s second Salon night. They will be performing poems from their Source to Solway set, which plots the journey of the River Nith through Nithsdale, on its way to the sea.

The poems, written by Betty, are read by the author and Doug, and are rich in detail gathered from locals and fishermen alike. The readings have a musical accompaniment provided by Doug on an Appalachian dulcimer hand-crafted in his workshops at Crawick, Sanquhar, and will feature the slow air 'The Winding Banks o' Nith', specially written by Doug to accompany the set.
Betty will also recite a selection of poems themed around 'Time and Tide’. These works are inspired by the author’s experiences around the coast, and on various islands which she visited as a volunteer with the Scottish National Trust Archaeology projects.

And Doug will also perform his wide ranging poetical observations of life in places as far apart as rural Galloway to the Far East. His poetry will have you wiping away a tear one moment, before his wry sense of humour reduces you laughter the next.

The Salon starts at 7.30pm and entry is free.

Robert Leighton talks photography this Saturday

Photographer Robert Leighton will be talking about his craft this Saturday (9th October) at 3pm, as part of the 5x5 exhibition. Robert’s photography features in the exhibition, which shows off five works from five artists.

The exhibition has been going really well. And Robert's work is a good counterpoint to the paintings and drawings of the other artists who are exhibiting.

The techniques he uses means that these photos can justifiably be seen as fine art in themselves.

Entry to Robert's talk is free.

Our latest exhibition 5x5 starts tomorrow (Saturday 2nd October 2010). It features five local artists each exhibiting five pieces of work and is organised by ThornhillArts. The Salon launches Tuesday 7th September

Thomas Tosh is launching a new evening gathering celebrating great local writing here in Dumfriesshire.

The Salon will be held on occasional Tuesdays and opens with a clutch of award-winning poets on September 7th at 7.30pm.

Hugh McMillan, Vivien Jones and JoAnne McKay will be reading from their latest works.

Vivien Jones will recite from her newly published collection of poetry, About Time, Too. She’s fresh from the success of winning the 2010 Poetry London Prize last month.

JoAnne McKay will be reading from her new work, Venti. JoAnne is part of a growing band of Dumfriesshire-based poets creating illustrated and hand-sewn pamphlets. Venti is a booklet that can be seen as a piece of art in itself.

Hugh McMillan will be bringing his award winning poems and his performance skills to underpin what will be a great evening.

Carol Taylor and Spring Fling films this weekend at TT

The Vernon and Lee Arts Festival gig ( see blog below) has kicked off a busy few days for Thomas Tosh. It's Spring Fling weekend and there are special films showing on Sunday as part of the event here at Thomas Tosh in the Old Parish Hall on Sunday.

The films are by Glasgow-based artist Henry Coombes. The films are: Gralloch & The Bedfords. The big local interest here is that they were filmed locally at Capenoch, Penpont.

Each screening lasts around 20 minutes. There are three screenings: 6pm,6.45pm and 7.30pm. The screenings are free. If you definitely want to attend one particular screening, just give us a bell and we will reserve seats, otherwise just turn up on the door. If one screening is full you can get into the next one. As well as the films, artist Carol Taylor will be at Tosh over Spring Fling weekend--Saturday, Sunday and Monday. She will be delighted to talk to customers about her exhibition in the parish hall: Beauty and the Bog. It's been getting a lot of attention and Carol is great at explaining her work and the scientific research around Scotland's wilderness that's inspired her.

Vernon and Lee's great night out at Thomas Tosh

David Vernon (he's on the left) and Dick Lee (right) played a great gig last night (Wednesday 26th May) at Thomas Tosh in the Old Parish Hall, Thornhill, as part of the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival 2010.

The accordion player and clarinettist promised to take the audience on a world tour of musical styles and they didn't disappoint.

They have a mass of experience and musical influences. From Jewish to French, Scottish Reels to Tango, with familiar tunes such as the theme from The Godfather thrown in for good measure.

The duo managed to make the old parish hall feel like there was a whole band playing rather than just two people. And they won the audience over completely.

They got us participating in the proper Scandinavian manner during their Norwegian set. "Just think that you are sitting in the pub and someone has just walked off with your pint. What would you say?"questioned Vernon. That got the right Nordic intensity of "Oy!" coming from the audience for one tune.

David Vernon hails from Dumfries. He says that the duo's aim is to get everyone leaving a gig with a smile on their face. That they did in spades. A great night for music and the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival 2010.

Beauty and the Bog at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill

Here's our window at our shop at 55 Drumlanrig Street in Thornhill celebrating our newest exhibition Beauty and the Bog in the Old Parish Hall. It's a Bold and Big exhibition from Carol Taylor, the Biggar-based artist who hails from Dumfries and Galloway. Carol worked with rural land researchers at the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen for the exhibition. And she's created fascinating images from terrifically impressive large-scale pieces (the biggest works we've had in to date) to small intimiate works.

Carol will be here to talk to customers about her work on Saturday and Sunday, 29th and 30th May, Spring Fling weekend. She's got loads of fascinating stuff to say about her work; from her use of scanning electron microscopes to create images to the antiseptic powers of moss. As always, admission is free.

Why Doesn't Gucci Make Zimmer Frames

Visual artist Jo Hodges is into the second week of her residency here at Thomas Tosh. Jo is in our upstairs gallery looking at the thorny issue of how designers, in particular, and society, as a whole, deals with ageing.

Jo's been getting objects that are stereotypically associated with old age and thinking about how top design houses might approach them. And Jo's been talking to TT customers about their thoughts on all the issues involved.

It's been really lively, and Jo is with us until this Friday so it's worth giving her a visit here at TT. This week Jo is working on more concepts and hopefully getting people involved in making finished objects or pieces of work for display.

Poetry special November 28th at TT

Thomas Tosh plays host to two local poets on Saturday 28th November at 3pm. Rab Wilson and Chrys Salt will be reading from their latest collections.

Rab is Dumfries' Burns Writing Fellow and has recently made a splash in national media for showing how Burns' epic Tam O'Shanter was influenced by an English poet.

Rab's got a winning style and his latest work is Life Sentence.

Chrys Salt's latest poetry book is Old Times, published by Hugh Bryden's imprint Roncadora Press. She's the powerhouse behind the art venue The Bakehouse in Gatehouse of Fleet.

Join us at 3pm on Saturday 28th November for what promises to be a good afternoon.

Place Identity Memory--last few days

Art takes the form of books in our latest exhibition at Thomas Tosh: Place Identity Memory. The books on display are either unique works or special limited editions created by local and international artists.

The exhibition finishes this coming Monday (21st September) so there are a few more days to catch it. It is well worth the effort.

The exhibition gives visitors the chance to pick up and peruse these works of art. It is a tactile, intimate experience with the books. There's also a great catalogue to go with the exhibition, designed by former TT artist-in-resident Hugh Bryden.

Place Identity Memory comes to Thomas Tosh after a successful debut at Gracefields Galleries in Dumfries, and it's next destination is the Stranraer Museum.

The exhibition has been organised by IRIS, a collective of artists. IRIS includes: Hugh Bryden; Jeremy Carlisle; Robbie Coleman; Linda Mallett; Andy Priestman; Julian Watson and Denise Zygaldo. All the artists live and work here in Dumfries and Galloway.

Hugh launches his summer's work this Saturday

Hugh Bryden is unveiling the new work he has created for his Summer at Home exhibition this coming Saturday (August 29th). And Hugh will be also holding print demonstrations and launching his new artists book collaborations.

Hugh is used to spending summers in warmer climes searching for inspiration. But staying at home in Dumfriesshire and spending time with us for one of the wettest summers in memory hasn’t dampened his spirits.

Indeed, two of the works Hugh has created for the exhibition Summer at Home capture this summer’s dominant weather theme: Blustery and Solway Rain.

Hugh has also created new works featuring well-known local sites and areas of beauty including: Kirkcudbright Tolbooth; Thornhill Cross; Powillimont Shore; Mennock Bridge and Devorgilla’s Bridge.

Print involving poetry is this Saturday’s theme. At 11am and 2pm Hugh will be showing how to create Poetry pamphlets—combining writing and simple bookbinding.

And at 3pm—Hugh will launch both of his new artists books. His collaboration with writer Chrys Salt entitled Old Times, and the other collaboration --Devorgilla’s Bridge --with poet Hugh McMillan. Both Hughs will read excerpts from the poetry pamphlets.

All the events are free, and you are very welcome to join us.

HUGH SHOWS HOW TO PRINT IT YOURSELF

Our artist in residence Hugh Bryden will show you how you can create prints in the comfort of your own home this Saturday (22nd August).

Hugh is holding the printing demonstrations at 11am and 2pm. And entry is free.

Hugh will be showing customers a range of printmaking techniques that can be carried out in the home without specialist equipment.

Hugh is also exhibiting new work created as part of his exhibition: Summer at Home. The exhibition’s been running here at Thomas Tosh for the past three weeks. The new prints of local scenes include: Devorgilla’s Bridge ; Penpont; Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas; Thornhill and Mennock.

It is all part of Hugh’s mission to completely change his exhibition by the end of its run. And next Saturday (29th August) we will be celebrating the launch of the new work here at Tosh and you are welcome to join us.

Hugh Bryden Workshop Saturday 8th August

Award winning publisher and printmaker Hugh Bryden is holding a free workshop at Thomas Tosh today (Saturday 8th August).

Hugh will be showing customers the techniques of how to make simple books, such as accordion structures. He uses these techniques himself in his artists books.

Hugh will be at Thomas Tosh from 10am onwards and you are very welcome to drop in at any time.

Hugh's first week as artist in residence at Thomas Tosh has been going well. He's produced the first print proofs of linocuts whilst he's been here.

The prints are of local scenes: Penpont's war memorial, the cross at Thornhill, and Mennock Bridge. They are great depictions of familiar places, which haven't been portrayed in linocut before.

Hugh has created strong, fresh images--with twists you'd expect from this award-winning printmaker.

For example, there's the barbed wire running along the wall behind the war memorial in his Penpont print. That's a literal representation of what you see, but you'd probably miss it if you visited the memorial. Hugh's work makes this echo of the trenches stand out.

Hugh will be holding more workshops later this month, and will be at TT every Tuesday as well.

What's coming up at Thomas Tosh: July and August

Summer is in full swing at Tosh. The Vanishing Scotland exhibition was launched this week and has been sparking a lot of local interest. We will be updating the blog about events linked to this exhibition.

And Burns: The Taxman is back at Tosh until the end of the summer as well.

There's a couple of other things that will hopefully whet your appetite.

JoAnne McKay is launching her new poetry collection The Fat Plant at TT on Sunday July 12th at 3pm. JoAnne's recital is worth catching as she delivers her readings extremely well. The Fat Plant has various themes including JoAnne's experiences as a police officer. But her family background dominates and provides rich insights into life.

And then in August, printmaker Hugh Bryden is launching Summer at Home, which ties in with Homecoming 2009. Hugh will be running workshops in printing and bookmaking. And his exhibition will change during its run to reflect a summer in Dumfriesshire.

Lloyd's Cycling Club at tt

Thomas Tosh was the lunchtime refuge for a group of cyclists from the Lloyd's Cycling Club today (Wednesday 10th June). They're on the Scottish leg of their charity ride from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Nith Landscape Workshops with Ed and Fiona

The Nith Landscapes exhibition is entering its final full week. And we've got a couple of special events tied in with it.

This coming Saturday (6th June), Ed Slater will be revealing his trade secrets by showing customers how he creates his pictures. Ed's bringing in canvases that he is currently working on to reveal the different stages in the creation of his amazing pieces.

Ed's pieces are multilayered, using acrylics, glass paint and found objects. They've raised a lot of interest at the Nith Landscapes exhibition. So his talk should be fascinating insight his work.

Ed will be at Tosh from 3pm on Saturday and entry is free.

And fellow exhibitor Fiona Allardyce-Lewis will be running our first paid entry workshop next Thursday (11th June).

Fiona has been inspired by the arts and crafts legend William Morris for this workshop. And particularly his vision encapsulated in his famous quote: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

Fiona's keepsake boxes and mirrors have lots of buyers. She manages to combine technical skill, mastery of perspective and humour to create distinctive pieces of art.

In the workshop, Fiona will be helping customers create painted placemats or coasters that will be theirs to keep. The workshop runs from 10am to 5pm and it costs £35. That includes all materials, lunch and morning and afternoon tea/coffee and cakes.

Fiona says: "I've run workshops for young people before, but this is my first workshop for adults, and I'm really looking forward to it."

Ed Slater returns to TT this Saturday

Ed Slater will be chatting to customers about his amazing art work this Saturday (30th May,2009) at TT from around 1pm.

Ed's work needs to be seen in the flesh. It always intrigues customers here and gets lots of admiration. He builds up his paintings with acrylic and glass paint and found objects.

Ed will be exhibiting at Tosh for two more weeks as part of the Nith Landscapes exhibition.

And as part of the exhibition we are planning a workshop to be run by another exhibitor, Fiona Allardyce-Lewis. I'll post those details as soon as we have it all worked out.

Hugh McMillan at Thomas Tosh

Local poet Hugh McMillan is at Thomas Tosh this Saturday (9th May, 2009) reading from his new poetry collection The Spider's Spin on It. He will be here from 3pm.

Hugh's poetry is great, you get a range of different tones --some poems are serious and sublime, others make you laugh out loud; all are thought provoking and shine through with Hugh's love of history (he's a history teacher at a school in Dumfries).

Hugh's knack is to get you into the minds of the knights, the soldiers' wives and even insects of history. The Spider's Spin on It of the title is the spider's view of its legendary encounter with Robert the Bruce. It's hilarious.

And this is not just Thomas Tosh's house view. Hugh has won prizes and Scottish Arts Council backing for his poetry. So it's official.

The book itself looks really special and is a collaboration with Dumfries-based printmaker Hugh Bryden, who is exhibiting at Thomas Tosh in August.

Susannah Goodyear Jewellery

We've got a new jewellery line in at Thomas Tosh, and it's created by Susannah Goodyear who lives in the area.

Susannah's work is fantastic and different in style from the other fine jewellery lines we have. She works in silver and steel, and is inspired by both nature and the natural curiosities you can stumble across in museums.

We've our own curiosity cabinet of Susannah's work including rings, earrings, and a very strange bird like creature. So come and take a look.

Preview night on Tuesday 31st March (2009) brought a good crowd and Melville won admiration for his new work, especially the landscape pieces of nearby Cairnshead. His paintings Glory of Autumn and Road to Cairnhead are proving big favourites in this exhibiton.

Melville's animal paintings are always popular. And Hoopie (featuring a poor cockerel that is only happy using one leg) and Highland Bull in Winter have gone down a treat.

Melville also came in on Saturday (4th April 2009) to meet customers at tt and talk about his work. And he plans to do so again in coming weeks. I'll post the details as and when.

True Colour continues until May 16th and you are very welcome to come and visit the exhibition. Entry is free.
